What is "Hero Month?"
July is Hero Month at CrossFit Eminence. It's a month where we pause our CrossFit programming in order to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This includes exemplary members of the CrossFit community who are no longer with us. "Hero WODs (workout-of-the-day)" first became a tradition in CrossFit in 2005, when a workout was posted for "JT". JT honors Petty Officer 1st Class Jeff Taylor, who was killed in Afghanistan in June 2005. Since then, there have been hundreds of other workouts that have been created to pay tribute to these brave individuals. Be ready, we will start these special workouts tomorrow, July 4th!
How Hero Month works
At CrossFit Eminence, our Hero Month will consist of 14 Hero WODs. All workouts will be logged on the whiteboard in the gym and tracked in our app, SugarWOD. Using SugarWOD will allow us to easily remember how we did previously on that particular workout. We also understand that sometimes the summertime gets busy, and it's not always possible to make it to the gym. In an effort to accommodate different schedules, you can make-up Hero Workouts during some of our regular classes. But we do ask that you speak to the coach beforehand, to make sure it won't be an issue logistically. And remember, there is also open gym time!
Things to consider
Hero workouts are meant to push your limits and test your abilities. Whether you scale or complete the workouts as written, complete these workouts with sweat and determination! And remember, your coaches are here to help you.
With that, here are some things to consider throughout our Hero Month:
- Hero workouts are very challenging, especially 14 of them in a month. Listen to your body and adjust the workouts appropriately. Remember, we post 3 options for every workout in order for you to stay safe and healthy.
- The order and selection of the workouts per week were carefully considered, in addition to the additional daily programming. Be aware that we will see multiple workouts with similar movements per week.
- Try to make it in on the day it's programmed. But if you can't, talk to a coach for help coming up with a plan to make it up!
See you in the gym!
Make sure to get these Hero workouts done this month! If you miss a day, work with a coach to make it up. July was hero month last year as well - and it was fun! This year, we have some new Hero workouts that most gyms haven't done before. We are excited to see you in the gym this month. Remember, it's not how well you can complete a movement, or how fast you finish. Instead, it's your hard work that is the real tribute to the dedication and sacrifice of the individual we are honoring that day. See you in the gym!
